Education and Assessment Modules for Clinical Staff Managing Acute Ischaemic Stroke

The use of intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke is below recommended benchmarks in most hospitals across Australia. This website will provide you with the opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills in the evaluation of acute stroke patients and their suitability for intravenous thrombolysis. This website is part of the Thrombolysis ImPlementation in Stroke trial and delivers a number of the important educational programs for the trial.

What is the TIPS trial?

TIPS is a cluster randomised trial that will rigorously evaluate a methodology to improve implementation of complex interventions by addressing the implementation of acute stroke thrombolysis. The lessons gleaned from this evaluation will be relevant to many other aspects of health care delivery in terms of increasing evidence-based practice. If successful, this study will have immediately delivered improved implementation of stroke thrombolysis.

How do I use this website?

Please note: At this point in website development you will find it easier to navigate the site on a desktop or laptop computer. We are working on improving compatability with hand held devices and tablets.

PHYSICIANS

The TIPS website is an e-learning package that provides 10 educational cases that illustrate important practice points and evidence. Hyperlinks and the drop-down menu under Library will provide access to various resources such as source literature. We recommend that you review the Education cases as a starting point. You will then be required to complete Parts A and B under the drop-down "Assessment Cases". Part A is a multiple choice and true or false quiz covering basic knowledge and is based around our National Stroke Foundation Guidelines and Stroke Thrombolysis Consensus Statement. Part B is a series of cases adapted from real world examples of patients under consideration for stroke thrombolysis. You are expected to complete 10 assessment cases and be required to come to the correct decisions at various key decision making points. Successful completion means your decisions are in line with expert opinion through the various phases of these cases. If an incorrect decision is made, feedback will be given and you should then move to a new case. You can come back to any of the cases and re-attempt them, however, we recommend that you browse the Library and Useful Links to improve your knowledge in any areas where the cases demonstrate a knowledge gap prior to re-attempting the assessment case.

NURSES

The TIPS website is an e-learning package that provides 10 educational cases that illustrate important practice points and evidence. Hyperlinks will provide access to various resources such as source literature. We recommend that you review these cases as a starting point. You will then obtain access to the NETSMART stroke nurse education program. Your login will be obtained from your TIPS nurse mentor and the NETSMART website can be accessed via our USEFUL LINKS or through NURSE RESOURCES.
